FIRST ANNUAL MIKEL WEISSER AWARDS PRESENTED TOMORROW


MITA to honor local activists at monthly event

 

PHOENIX, Ariz., (May 25, 2021) – The Marijuana Industry Trade Association (MITA) is excited to present the first annual Mikel Weisser Awards at its monthly networking event on May 26 at the Found:RE hotel in downtown Phoenix.

Mikel Weisser was a longtime cannabis advocate and state director for Arizona NORML, a group that lobbied for legalized recreational sales. Weisser died last year of a heart attack.

“Mikel was an integral part of the cannabis community and he is terribly missed,” said Demitri Downing, executive director of MITA. “We created this award in his name to honor others who show a commitment to advocacy and advancing the cannabis industry.”

This year five industry trailblazers will be honored including:
• Steve White, The founder of Harvest Health and Recreation, Arizona’s largest cannabis company
• Thomas Dean, Formal legal counsel for NORML and a well-known cannabis attorney.
• Dr. Will Humble, Executive Director for the Arizona Public Health Association who helped create MITA’s robust social equity mentorship program.
• Gordon Hamilton, activist, grower and founder of the Arizona Dispensary Network, the precursor to MITA.
• Mikel Weisser, Beth Weisser will accept the award named in his honor on behalf of Mikel.
